WebPage Tips - Creating Effective Keyword Links

Google, Yahoo, and MSN each use incoming links to rank your website on their search engine results pages. The link text ( the Anchor) guides their ranking by relevancy. Every link you create, including internal links, should use meaningful text as the link.

Internal Link Keywords and Phrases

For example, many webpages use the phrase About Us for one of their pages.  This phrase provides no value to the search engine, and there are millions of sites with this phrase as an internal link.  Instead use your site name as in: About SiteMapLinks. Use ONLY the name portion as the link itself. This way the search engine will record a meaningful link using your name. Some sites may use Home Page on their other pages as a return link. Better to use SiteMapLinks Home, with SiteMapLinks as the link back. Make every link on every page count!

External Link Keywords and Phrases

For an effective external linking strategy, you must determine the keyword(s) or keyword phrase(s) that you think people will type in the search engine box to find your site. This is critical. If you have a coin store, you do NOT want to use the keywords Numismatic Purveyors, you want to use Coin Dealer. Carpets instead of Floor Coverings, Cars instead of Automobiles. Put yourself in this thought frame: If I were looking for my business, what would I type into a search engine?

As you build external links, vary the anchor text for the links to include variations on your keywords.
